A grandfather who died after his motorbike was "catapulted" 50 metres across a road has been described as a "true craftsman" by his family.

Marc Cleverly, died in hospital on April 9 after the accident on Fairfield Street next to Fairfield Park on April 8.

The 50-year-old carpenter and joiner from Chessington was a keen league bowler at Tolworth bowling alley and became a grandfather on Christmas Eve last year.

A statement from his family said: “He will always be a much loved and respected man; [he] had the gift of making everyone feel special and will always be remembered for being a true craftsman.”

Flowers and cards have been left on Dudley Road in memory of Mr Cleverly, who was also known as Flint.

Tributes said: “A great man who will be sadly missed by all that have crossed his path. Rest in peace Flint. Wayne ‘the ref’, Lisa and children.”

“Dear Ted, Flint aka Marc. RIP. A real tragedy, you will be truly missed.”

“Rest in peace Flint, love you mate, miss you so much. Love Bod, Kelly and kids.”

Adam Plowden, a 19-year-old student at Kingston University, was on the Fairfield with friends when the accident happened.

He said: “We saw a motorbike just skid along the road and there was not the rider on the bike so he must have fallen off.

“It skidded a good 50m to the end of the road. It must have been going at some speed. The way it skidded I would have said it was going at least 40mph.

“About 20 people got out of their cars straight away, running toward the casualty. People were saying ‘Don’t take off his helmet, leave him where he is’.

Three ambulances attended the scene along with the police and part of Fairfield Park was evacuated to make room for a helicopter on standby.

Eyewitnesses said paramedics performed CPR for a number of minutes.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "It is believed a motorcycle was travelling along Fairfields South when it lost control near the junction with Dudley Road. It is not thought any other vehicle was involved in the collision."

Police are appealing for information and said officers from the Road Death Investigation Unit based at Hampton Traffic Garage are investigating.
