A man who died after a train hit him at Surbiton train station has been named as David Milan.

The 68-year-old, who lived in Ewell Road, Surbiton, died after being hit by a train on Wednesday, April 6.

He was struck by the 7.59am Bournemouth to London Waterloo service after leaving a platform filled with commuters.

The relative of Mr Milan's neighbour, who did not wish to be named, said: "He was a charming person with a certain, humorous wit. It's just so tragic, I still can't believe it.

"We've been visiting for years and he's always been very friendly.

"The last thing he said when he saw me, on about April 1, was 'you're back', and he was smiling.

"After 30 years or so in the nursing profession, I didn't detect anything was wrong."

Matt Harris, who witnessed the accident, described it as "horrendous".

An inquest was opened and adjourned today and a file has been prepared for the coroner.
