Important flood defence improvement work will begin in early May to help protect homes near the Thames from tidal floods.
Putney’s Ashlone Wharf manages the flow of water between Beverley Brook and the River Thames, but is in poor condition and requires urgent repairs.
It is anticipated gates would completely fail within the next few years if no action were taken, exposing more than 450 homes to the risk of tidal flooding.
A construction site will be created around the wharf during the works and a temporary road will run along Barn Elms sports pitches to provide vehicle access to the site.
The riverside tow path between Putney and Barnes will remain open throughout the works, as will Beverley Brook Walk.
The Environment Agency (EA), which is undertaking the work, revealed the project is not related to Thames Water's plan to use Barn Elms as a tunnelling site.
EA project manager David Blythin said: “This is a really important project that will provide protection to more than 450 residents.
“Additional benefits will include an improved landscape and more wildlife habitat. We're working closely with Wandsworth Council to minimise the disruption for people.”
