The number rapes in Kingston has increased by 45 per cent while overall crime rose 1.3 per cent, according to figures released today.

The police data reveals that 55 rapes and 124 other sexual offences were recorded in Kingston in the financial year 2010-11, compared to 38 and 112 respectively in 2009-10.

In total, 11,158 offences were recorded in the borough last year; an increase of 146 on the previous year.

However, the figure was the lowest of all London boroughs, and Richmond came second lowest with 11,739 crimes, although this represented an increase of 1.9 per cent.

Burglary rose by 5 per cent to 1,240, while theft and handling increased 4 per cent to 4,772.

However, violence against the person fell 1 per cent and robbery was down 10 per cent, and there were no murders in Kingston last year.

Neighbouring boroughs Sutton, Merton and Wandsworth all saw overall crime figures drop last year.
