An elderly woman was injured by burglars during a break-in at her home.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the aggravated burglary in Grovelands Road, Purley, on April 14.

Two suspects are believed to have entered the premises from the rear at about 9.30pm.

The occupants, a man and woman in their 70s, went to investigate the noise and were confronted by the two burglars.

The two men, described as white, with London accents and wearing dark clothing,assaulted them, before making their escape.

The woman was taken to hospital after receiving injuries to her shoulder and arm.

She has now been discharged.

Detective Chief Inspector Wanless, from Croydon CID said: “We would urge anyone who might have witnessed something or seen somebody acting suspiciously in the area to contact us.

“I would like to reassure people that this type of incident is very rare, particularly in Croydon, and we are working hard to identify the suspects.

“The local Safer Neighbourhoods team has also increased their patrols in the area.

“However we’d also remind residents to do their bit by keeping windows and doors locked and secure and to call 999 if they see anybody acting suspiciously in their neighbourhood.”
