Two dogs were trapped in a house fire after their owners went out leaving a chip pan on their stove.

Firefighters rescued the border collie and weimaraner dogs from the house in Beddington Lane at about 7.45pm last night.

A neighbour rang 999 after hearing the smoke alarms and seeing smoke in the property.

The owners had gone out and forgotten a chip pan had been left on a lit stove.

The house had been badly smoke damaged, but the fire itself was contained to the kitchen.

Wallington white watch manager James Simms said: "The dogs were delighted to see the firefighters when they arrived. One of them has only just finished getting all the dog hair off his uniform."

He said it was due to the smoke alarm that firefighters were able to get to the fire before it spread further.
