The borough's boys gynmastics team scored gold and silver medals in the Balfour Beatty London Youth Games.

The teams won two golds, two silvers and a bronze medal in events at the Goresbrook Leisure Centre, Dagenham over the weekend.

The borough came second behind winners Kingston in the Tier 1 on Saturday, but finished ahead of runners-up Southwark and third-placed Barking and Dagenham in the Tier 2 event on Sunday.

Joseph Armer, Croydon team manager, said: ““I’m very very happy, the boys worked very hard and they did very well. We’ve had a couple of weeks training for it and even before that we had a few competitions to begin the year with. But they’ve worked really hard and I’m happy with the result.

“I certainly hope the success this week will encourage more people to get involved in the sport; the focus is to try build up the numbers and gather interest in the sport.”

England and Manchester United footballer Rio Ferdinand competed in the gymnastics competition when he was younger.

Other superstars to have competed in London Youth Games include Olympic 400m champion Christine Ohuruogu, Chicago Bulls’ basketball captain Luol Deng and Paralympic wheelchair racing champion David Weir.
