An anti-trafficking organisation that campaigns against sex slavery has been chosen as this year’s Croydon Champions charity.

Croydon Community Against Trafficking (CCAT) has been waging war on the borough’s sex trade for the past three-and a-half years.

The organisation has focused on exposing brothels, which exploit women trafficked into the borough to be used as sex slaves.

CCAT, made up of residents, businesses and other concerned individuals, was set up after it was revealed Croydon has one of the largest sex industries in the country.

The borough was also identified as one of the towns where trafficked women were being sent in significant numbers, according to a report published by the London-based Poppy Project.

CCAT has been monitoring the borough’s brothels. Its careful research and campaigning has led to fewer brothels in the area, down from about 120 to 60.

Male members from the group regularly call escort agencies and massage parlours to determine what kind of “services” they offer and identify places that might be exploiting trafficked women.

The evidence is then passed on to police, who have used it to raid a number of suspect establishments over the years.

It has also campaigned for local newspapers to stop running advertisements for massage parlours, which may be using trafficked women. The organisation was instrumental in getting police to launch a campaign to stop papers from running adverts for massage parlours.

Newsquest, which publishes the Croydon Guardian, took the decision to axe adult advertisements in July 2008 in all of its 305 titles across the country.

The chairman of CCAT said he was delighted the charity had been chosen.

He said: “This is wonderful news. CCAT will continue to work with the police and the council to make sure they are investigating illegal establishments operating in the borough.

“Sex trafficking is still a huge problem in our borough, with so many young people out of work it is becoming an increasing concern. And we have a number of extremely vulnerable people who visit Lunar House to sort out their citizenship.”

whats the point of "waging war on the borough's sex trade" when the lack of immigration controls at our borders are the "weak" link??

Totally agree .... David Cameron was boasting about reducing immigration to 'tens of thousands' a year .... could'nt do it .... another false promise by another bunch of weak livered politicians who are allowing our towns to become severly cloggede up with masses of people arriving no matter if its legal, illegal, overstaying, or just visting for a decade ..... needs to be dealt with

Why not go full blast on catching those responsible for fetching these women into the Uk???

Stopping adverts in newspapers falls miles short from actually stopping women from getting here in the first place

If you want to actually tackle the foreign imported sex-trade head on then UKBA, the police, the border police, every one should be working together to stop this because it people know how easy it is to get someone in to our country then it becomes a security issue with fanatics coming here as well.
Thanks for reading

these moral supremacist groups are just religious fanatics who want to punish women for choosing sex work,as has been pointed out,its britains lax immigration & border controls that allow human trafficking to happen,
ccat are very brave in persecuting women who work in the sex industry, but are too scared to target human traffickers

Itis good that local newspapers have been pressurised into not carrying advertisements for massage parlours. Perhaps local newsagents could also be pressurised, into not displaying the advertisements of massage parlours also, as these may be using trafficked women? A newsagent is a part of the local community, and should contribute to its wellbeing.

I agree that newsagents should not carry adverts for 'massage parlours'. CCAT have exposed that these massage parlours are thinly disguised brothels harbouring women kept as slaves.

This is not about targeting and villifying sex workers who choose to do this of their own free will-it is about flagging up vulnerable people who are forced into this life through deception, trickery and coercion and certainly are not doing this of their own free will.

How many more victims would still be living out their hellish existence of rape, torture and abuse in high street flats and surburban homes if it were not for groups like CCAT bringing it to the attention of the police and the community?

Well done CCAT, keep up the good work.
