Ten people have been hospitalised after a care home caught fire overnight.

The residents in Guinness Court, on Chepstow Road, Croydon, were taken to hospital for smoke inhalation and other injuries following the blaze at 1am this morning.

The building was evacuated and other residents have been temporarily rehomed by Croydon Council.

A Croydon Council spokesman said: "There were 14 people displaced, all of which would be considered vulnerable due to their age and the additional trauma of the fire.

"We re-housed five of them in Jury's Inn, there are four in Mayday and we believe four more in St Helier.

"Most of the residents taken to hospital were taken for a check up however there is one of particular concern who was suffering from the result of smoke inhalation.

"We have been in contact with The Guiness Housing Trust, the owners of the block, and they are assessing the situation at present.

"We have sent a social worker to Jury's Inn to ascertain what is needed and reassure people as they wake.

"We also have a care manager on standby to sort clothing and so forth depending on what is needed."
