Croydon remembered the 36 people from the borough who died in the Lanfranc air disaster 50 years ago last week.

A special service was held at Croydon Minster on Sunday to mark the anniversary.

On August 9, 1961, 34 boys and two teachers from Lanfranc Secondary Modern were on board a Cunard Eagle Airways Vickers Viking aeroplane, looking forward to a holiday in Norway.

But for reasons never discovered, despite an extensive inquiry, the plane crashed into the Holtaheia mountain, near Stavanger, in Norway, killing everybody on board - pupils, teachers and crew.

Croydon Male Voice Choir also sang at the memorial. They sang three solo items to the congregation, incuding The Lords Prayer and the Hallelujia Chorus.

The choir were accompanied by their pianist Lana Bode.

The service also touched on the victims of the Norway bomb and massacre, and reflected on the riots that took place last week.

John Cheetham, of the Croydon Communities Consortium, said: β€œAt this particular time perhaps we want to come together, right across Croydon, to show those who rampaged through our town on Monday night that it is our town; not theirs.”
