A charity has offered its services to help house those left with nothing after the riots.

Nightwatch, which runs a resettlement plan for homeless people in Croydon, has offered to help house 10 families who lost their homes in London Road.

The council are unable to furnish homes, only relocate people.

They are asking for donations towards the £10,000 it will cost to initially rehouse the families in accommodation with furniture.

A spokesman for Nightwatch said: “We are proceeding with this urgent work in the certainty that people will step forward and donate the funds, and when the bills come, we can pay them.”

Anyone wanting to make donations of furniture can make them to the furniture project Emmaus who are on 0208 761 4276 as Nightwatch does not have the facilities.

Cheques should be payable to Nightwatch and sent to PO Box 9576, London, SE23 3ZH. Alternatively, by BACS: our account is with Lloyds TSB and, the sort code is 77-30-01 The account number 88134460 and the account name Nightwatch.

Meanwhile, Blue House day nursery is donating hampers of essential items to those affected by the riots.

It is asking members of the public to bring donations to the nursery by 12pm next Monday (August 22).

Mandy Lupton, junior deputy manager, said: “We are devastated at the aftermath of the riots that hit the town centre and are hoping to help the community get back on their feet.”
