Wandsworth's top cop has refused to discuss public anger at the police response to the Battersea riots.

Acting Borough Commander, Detective Superintendent Gerry Campbell, said he would not "talk about the past" because he wanted to focus on "moving forward".

Officers have been working tirelessly to punish lawbreakers since looters and vandals ran wild in St John's Road and Lavender Hill, near Clapham Junction, last Monday.

Anywhere between 20 and 30 borough homes have been raided every day. As of Monday this week, officers had made 73 arrests and charged 33 people with various riot-related offences.

And Det Supt Campbell promised "further arrests will be made".

He said in excess of 200 police officers, supported by community support officers, had been patrolling Wandsworth's streets each day.

However, Det Supt Campbell would not be questioned about the police operation on the night of the riots, which has been criticised by members of the public who claim police failed to swiftly deal with the criminals.

He said: "It's right that those questions need to be asked however, at this time I want to focus on moving forward and concentrate on the future."

Det Supt Campbell did confirm officers were "aware" of the threat posed by social networking sites such as Twitter, which was littered with comments about where further riots might take place last week.

He also praised community members for helping police round up the wrong-doers by reporting suspicious activity and giving tip-offs.
