Firefighters rescued a woman and her baby after they suffered suspected carbon monoxide poisoning from fumes entering their window.

The woman in her 20s phoned 999 after becoming light headed, nauseous and getting a headache in her flat on Battersea Rise at 11.45pm on Saturday, August 13.

Battersea firefighters believed she and her child, less than one year old, may have been overcome by fumes coming from a flue from a shop below them.

They pair were taken to hospital as a precaution, but are believed to be safe.

Monitoring equipment later deployed in the property did not pick up any evidence of the deadly, odourless gas.

A spokesman for Battersea fire station said carbon monoxide detectors were a good idea, especially for homes with boilers.

He also said people should make sure their boilers are regularly serviced.
