A green milestone has been reached, almost a decade ahead of schedule, as half of Surrey’s household waste is being recycled.

A Government target requires councils to recycle at least 50 per cent of household waste by 2020, which means the county is nine years ahead of time.

The rate of recycling not only benefits the environment but saves Surrey taxpayers millions of pounds a year in reduced landfill costs.

Dr Lynne Hack, Surrey County Council’s cabinet member for environment, said: “Achieving a 50 per cent recycling rate required a lot of hard work by residents and Surrey councils, so we should all be proud of this achievement.”

Surrey County Council is now focused on reaching a 70 per cent household waste recycling rate by 2014, by improving recycling centres, identifying more materials to be recycled and educating people about the benefits.
