A crew of firefighters from Norbury fire station were called to a blaze at a footwear store in Brixton during the early hours of this morning.

About 40 firefighters from Brixton and the surrounding stations attended the fire in the basement of a Footlocker store on Brixton Road between 11pm and 8am.

A spokesman for Norbury station said the flames were finally extinguished by about 8.30am.

Looters set fire to several shops, including Footlocker, in Brixton last week as violent riots spread across south London.

But London Fire Brigade said they did not think this morning’s fire was related to the recent civil unrest.

No one was injured in the blaze and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Atlantic Road is now closed between Brixton Road and Coldharbour Lane and Brixton tube station remains shut.
