Campaigners are fighting against plans to change a bus route to a residential road wrongly used by lorries with out-of-date SatNavs.

Transport for London wants to re-route the 470 bus through Windsor Avenue in South Wimbledon, which means removing current height and width restrictions and literally paving the way for lorries to drive down their road.

Rosemarie Hamilton and Tony Ashby, who live on adjoining Liberty Avenue, have taken photos of lorries wrongly driving down their road and having to reverse back out with difficulty and help from police.

Mr Ashby said: “TfL have not consulted with us about this. We have been fighting against these plans for years – this is the third time they’ve tried it – and we never received so much as a letter. They either forgot about us or are trying to keep it a secret.

“The lorries get stuck on Liberty Avenue between six and ten times a week, sometimes really late at night to the point where we have to use ear plugs to sleep.”

Another Liberty Avenue resident, Logan Skinner, said: “I believe that the proposed change to the bus route will increase the number of vehicles using Liberty and Windsor Avenues as a short cut, increasing the number of speeding cars we already suffer from.”

Councillors representing the residents also claim they hadn’t been consulted.

Writing to TfL in February, Lavender Fields Councillors Mark Allison, Mark Betteridge and Edith Macauley said: “It is not clear what substantive changes have been made to the scheme since 2002/3 and 2006/7 to outweigh the very clear views of residents or councillors then.

“We are anxious that any consultation forms. If they were even delivered, were put through letteboxes along with other junk mail, and that residents were therefore not aware of their importance.

"They will have looked like countless other leaflets and thrown away.”

A TfL spokeswoman said nearly two-thirds of people consulted were in favour of the proposed changes.

She said: “This proposed change is part of a bigger project to improve the South Wimbledon Business Area to encourage more walking, cycling and the use of public transport and to give more homes and businesses better access to a bus service. “

Residents can now respond to a consultation by Merton Council about changes to the width restriction before it makes a decision in September.
