A mechanical digger on the back of a lorry travelling on the A3 has hit two bridges at the Ace of Spades roundabout in Hook.

The vehicles also damaged signs attached to the pedestrian bridge, which has been closed by firemen. Firemen were first called at 10.52am.

The accident is causing major transport disruption on the southbound A3, with traffic diverted off and back onto the road via slip roads, and queuing back to New Malden.

The accident caused minor damage to concrete on the two road bridges.

The lorry was on the inside lane when it hit the structures, and is currently parked under the bridge carrying traffic from Chessington towards Surbiton.

Police, and ambulance and firemen from Surbiton, Epsom and Esher all attended the scene, but there were no reports of any injuries.

Transport for London engineers are on their way to the scene, but there is no indication of when the road will be reopened.

Traffic travelling north bound is unaffected.
