Two people escaped an electrical fire that ripped through a house this morning.

About 15 firefighters from Sutton and Wallington were called to the property in Rosebery Gardens, off Lewis Road, Sutton at about 4.40am this morning.

Firefighters believe the blaze started in the electrical intake cupboard of the three bedroom house.

Flames and smoke destroyed the downstairs of the house, while there was extensive smoke and heat damage to the upstairs.

A man and a woman, believed to be in their 30s, fled the house after their smoke alarm went off.

A firefighter from the scene said: "It was the smoke alarm, and the fact they kept their doors shut to stop the fire spreading quickly, that probably saved their lives."
