After one season with the big boys in the Ryman Premier League, Croydon Athletic find themselves back in Division One South when the season begins on Saturday, writes Matt Maltby.

The Rams, who endured a horrid season of off-field problems last year that almost saw them go out of business altogether, will line-up at Burgess Hill Town with a much-changed side from the one that got relegated in May.

Only Colin Hartburn and Rhys Coleman remain after co-managers Dave Garland and Bob Langford instigated a clear-out as the club searches for a new beginning.

“I am not sure what lies ahead for us this season,” said Garland.

“You are probably better off asking me after 12 games or so.

“I have been pleased with our preparations though and the way things have been going.

“We have a completely new squad and we have got to find our feet in Division One and take it as it comes.”

Players in: Most notably Dave King, David Graves, Taurean Roberts, Jamie England, Dave Stevens, Kery Kedze and Byron Brown.

Players out: Everyone apart from Colin Hartburn and Rhys Coleman.

Position last year: 21st and relegation.

We say: Mid-table. It’s a time of transition but Dave Garland and Bob Langford are good managers.

Garland says: “Consolidate and create a firm surrounding for the club and hopefully get it back to where it belongs to be, at the highest level.”
