A father-of five was killed outside his sister's birthday party after a paving slab was smashed over his head in an attack.

What began as an evening of family celebration turned into tragedy when Paul Coleman, from Royston Avenue, Wallington, was viciously attacked in the early hours of Sunday morning (August 14).

The 35-year-old had been at his sister Simone's birthday party, held in affluent Brigstock Road, in Coulsdon, when he was bludgeoned with the concrete slab after an argument with unwanted guests.

Mr Coleman, whose wife is expecting his sixth child, collapsed on the pavement with serious head injuries in nearby St Andrews Road and was cradled in his uncle's arms as they waited for paramedics to arrive.

He was taken to a south London hospital where he was put on a life support machine but he was pronounced dead at 5.25pm on Monday.

A 32-year-old man was charged with his murder on Monday evening, just hours after his death.

The party, which started earlier on the Saturday night, was attended by a number of family members including teenage relatives.

At around 2am, as the party progressed, a number of men, who were known to most of the guests, were thrown out of the party.

But as they gathered outside the house, in St Andrews Road, Coulson, an argument started with Mr Coleman.

It is understood he was walking away from the group of men when he was attacked from behind with the slab.

One family friend told the Sutton Guardian: "It was a really nice party and everyone was enjoying themselves. Everyone had had a drink and the party was in full flow when three or four guys were kicked out for causing trouble.

"Paul, who had been drinking like everyone else, was outside the party when he was attacked.

"It's disgusting that some people can behave like that and everyone just hopes the police catch the people that did it as quickly as possible."

Although police were quick to make the arrest, detectives are still appealing to the public for more information about the incident.

Detective Chief Inspector Damian Allian, from the Met's Homicide and Serious Crime Command (HSCC), said: "We are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the attack to come forward and speak to us as soon as possible."

Anyone with information can contact the incident room on 020 8721 4805, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Paul James Game, 32, from Empire Square, in Borough, was arrested on Monday and charged with murder following Mr Coleman's death on Monday evening.

Mr Game will next appear at the Old Bailey on Thursday (August 17).

A 23-year-old man also arrested was released without charge.
