Police have said a recent fire at a footwear store in Brixton was not linked to recent disorder in the area.

About 40 firefighters from Brixton and the surrounding stations attended the fire in the basement of a Footlocker store on Brixton Road between 11pm and 8am on Tuesday night.

A spokesman for Lambeth borough police said the fire was being treated as suspicious but said it was not being directly linked to the riots last week.

Looters previously set fire to the store as disorder spread across south London.

Atlantic Road, which was closed between Brixton Road and Coldharbour Lane following the fire, is expected to re-open later today.

Anyone with information should call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
