Director of rugby Conor O'Shea says Harlequins young prop star Darryl Marfo is far from the finished article.

The 20-year-old stood out on Tuesday night, putting in a robust display as a young Quins outfit beat Championship side Esher 24-21 in a friendly at the Stoop.

The Battersea Ironsides youngster has battled back from the back injury that cut short a loan spell at National Division Two South Richmond last season.

Esher director of rugby Mike Schmid, who has signed Quins quartet Will Collier, Charlie Walker, Charlie Matthews and Rob Buchanan on dual-registration loans this term, was given short shrift when inquiring about Marfo's availability.

The Molesey Road chief played a large part in the development of rising star Joe Marler, but O'Shea believes the latest loosehead off the Quins production line has a long way to go to match the former Richmond-Upon-Thames College student.

"You can see the type of player he is going to be. He is very aggressive and wants to learn," he said.

"He had a bad injury last year and has worked his socks off in pre-season to get himself into great shape.

"He knows he has got further to go in that respect and he needs to play a lot of rugby.

"We know we've got a guy who is very popular as well as being a player with a lot of ability adna d esire to want to succeed. He wants to better himself.

"You learn a lot from matches like that and by chucking so many young players in, but credit to Esher. That was a great performance by them."

Nick Easter, Ugo Monye and Chris Robshaw will officially learn their World Cup fates on Monday, with Easter expected to make the final cut after featuring in warm-up defeat against Wales.

Robshaw and Monye are set to play for Quins against Nottingham on Friday night knowing they are unlikely to make the trip, but O'Shea believes they should not give up hope.

"They're disappointed, but playing for your country is no divine right," he added.

"A lof of people haven't been picke din squads, but they are close and England still have to play Ireland. If they keep their form you never know with injuries.

"There are lots of years left in them and a World Cup in 2015 to keep their juices flowing."

Injured stars George Robson, Chris Brooker and Peter Brown are expected to return to training next week.
