Sutton has 13 fewer police officers patrolling the borough than it did this time last year following a series of Government cuts to frontline services.

According to the lastest figures published by the Metropolitan Police Authority (MPA) Sutton's police population has fallen from 354 to 341 since March 2010.

The MPA figures found that in March 2010 there were 20,599 police officers working in the 32 London boroughs but this had fallen to 19,471 officers by July this year, a drop of 1,130.

A Sutton police spokesman said: "The total number of crimes in Sutton fell by nearly five per cent during the last financial year and by nearly 20 per cent over the last five years.

"Confidence and satisfaction in policing remains high in Sutton. We are one of the safest boroughs and we want to make it the safest in London."

However the cuts will not stop there because, earlier this year, Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London, agreed to axe another 700 officers by 2013-14.

A spokesman for The Mayor of London said: "These figures also do not take into account the hundreds of special constables who are currently training to become full time police officers.

"By March 2012 the Met will have well over 32,000 police officers, 1,000 more than when the Mayor was elected."
