Packed with fruit, flowers and vegetables, The Epsom Garden Society held its autumn show this week in partnership with the Royal Horticultural Society’s (RHS) Dig Together Day.

Hundreds of visitors turned out to support the national campaign organised by the UK’s leading gardening charity, RHS, to celebrate gardening with the Epsom Garden Society extending its autumn show to include the whole community.

Jill Farnham, show secretary said: "It was a very good show.

"We had over 150 entries and exceptional flower art displays with a very nice selection from junior exhibitors.

"It was the first time that the younger visitors could take part in a flower arranging class and they were gorgeous considering their age."

Held at St Martin’s junior school in Ashley Road on September 17, the free event offered 80 classes for visitors to take part in, advice for encouraging wildlife into your garden and tea and cakes provided by St Martin’s parent teacher association.

Competitions included the longest runner bean, which was scooped by show secretary Jill Farnham with her 17.5 inch runner bean, while the funniest shaped vegetable competition was won by an 11-year-old girl for a suggestive shaped carrot.

RHS Community Horticulture Manager, Stephanie Eynon said: "Affiliated societies and gardening clubs are the custodians of grassroots gardening.

"They all have fantastic knowledge, advice and tips on everything from protecting the environment through gardening, right down to how to grow giant marrows.

"We hope the knowledge these clubs hold will be discovered by new generations."
