A record number of kittens were taken in by Epsom based charity Cats in Crisis this September, run by a woman out of her home for the last 20 years.

Rosemary Cook, 42, set up the sanctuary for abandoned cats in 1988 caring for up to 20 cats at her home in the Epsom Downs with a team of willing volunteers and foster carers who take the cats in while Mrs Cook searches for a new home.

She said: "I've never known so many kittens.

"We won’t be having a party just yet.

"I have to find reliable homes for all these little ones and then of course their elders."

About 15 kittens are currently being cared for at Mrs Cook's who is keen to find them suitable homes.

Many have been found abandoned in derelict buildings with newborn kittens or are brought in heavily pregnant.

Others have been brought in when couples split up or abandoned due to a job loss.

She added: "We have so many middle-aged strays which we have made well and who now need reliable homes with grown up families.

"Some have been so teased or suffered so much they need to be the only pet."
