Chief executive of her own fashion company aged just 16, a young designer exhibited her new spring/summer collection at a London festival at the weekend.

Chika Iwenofu, who is now 17 and studying textiles, art and economics at Harris Academy, South Norwood, was the only fashion designer at the Africa Music Festival on the Southbank.

The teenager, of Holmwood Road, South Norwood, produces all the clothing for Chika Couture in her home.

She said: “All my spare time after college I’m at home sowing, it is quite crazy but I love it.”

Drawing inspiration from her Nigerian heritage for her women’s clothing range she has previously showcased her work during the London Fashion Week at Fashion’s Finest Renaissance show in February, and was nominated for best graduate designer of the year award.

She said: “I got a lot of exposure then and hopefully will attract more this weekend. I would love to expand to begin manufacturing in Nigeria.

"There are so many talented craftsmen out there who never get the chance.”
