Archery, medieval re-enactment and zumba were just some of the activities at a family fun day held to raise money for a new youth club in Addiscombe.

The Sir Philip Game Centre in Morland Avenue, was first established in 1974 as one of three Boys' Clubs opened by Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Philip Game.

The club was then run and funded by Croydon Council's youth services, but due to cuts funding was recently pulled forcing the club the close.

The event on September 17, was held to help kick-start funding and raise awareness of the new youth club, which is set to open at the end of October, for the use of young people aged 11 and over.

Just under £400 was raised at the event, which was also attended by former World Boxing Champion Duke McKenzie MBE.

Mr McKenzie said: "It is a pleasure to come along, when I was younger there used to be around 20 of us who came here and it's great to see young people here again."

As well as a cake stall and table top sale, there was also a raffle where prizes included tickets to Chessington World of Adventures, meals for two, gift cards for Tesco and a family ticket to Ripley's Believe It or Not! in Piccadilly Circus.

All prizes were generously donated by businesses, with Warburtons donating more than 500 hot dog rolls and burger buns for the BBQ.

Sarah Whitfield, Vice Chairwoman of the SPG Youth club said: "Everyone that came had a fantastic time. We want to say a big thank you to all involved, from those who donated to those that helped us set up and pack away. We could not have done it without you.

"We are all so passionate about the Sir Philip Game Centre and hope to raise its profile through our new youth club."
