Readers can now help an Old Malden church restore its vandalised war memorial by donating online.

Please click the link below to send money to St John the Baptist, which needs to raise over £3,000 to ensure its annual service of remembrance can go ahead in November.

Write the title of our campaign, Honour the Fallen, in the special 'instruction to charity' box when making a donation, which must be a minimum of £5, using a credit or debit card.

The war memorial was toppled on September 5 under the weight of thieves who stole a strip of lead from its roof.

And the church has warned it may have to cancel its annual remembrance service if the 90-year-old oak monument cannot be restored in time.

Rev Kevin Scott said: “I am very aware how important and how significant this monument is not just for people who remember the two world wars, but also the people who have served since then.

“We have people who served in the Falklands and Bosnia, and for them it’s an iconic monument. They see it as theirs and their comrades’.

“That’s why we are determined we are going to get it back up.

“The campaign is absolutely brilliant, that people are doing this.

“What’s most important to me as parish priest is the significance it has in the hearts and minds, not only for the older generation, and that’s why I want to see it restored.”

We hope you can help.
