Fire crews from West Norwood and Norbury fire stations are battling a large fire at a Croydon tyre-shredding plant as fears of cylinder explosions continue.

They are among 50 firefighters at the two-storey warehouse, on Purley Way, which went up in flames shortly before 1.15am.

Parts of the warehouse are still on fire and firefighters are working to tackle the flames.

The building has been badly damaged and part of the roof has collapsed. There are two acetylene gas cylinders and one propane gas cylinder inside the warehouse, which it is feared could explode.

The warehouse also contained a number of tyres which created a large amount of thick, black smoke throughout the early hours of this morning.

An exclusion zone is in place around the site and the A23, Purley Way, is closed in both directions between Waddon Way and Edgehill Road.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage and firefighters are likely to remain at the scene for most of the day.

An investigation will be carried out by to establish the cause of the blaze.
