Commuters face traffic chaos on Purley Way for the second morning in the row, with traffic queuing in both directions because of an oil spillage.

The A23 in Waddon is closed in both directions between Fiveways Corner and the junction with Croydon Road following a large oil spillage at around 1am this morning.

Firefighters from Croydon fire station were called to the scene and found oil covering all four lanes.

Three empty barrels of engine oil were later discovered in nearby Ridgeway.

Crew Manager Dean Barnes said: "We believe this was a malicious act as the barrels and other items had clearly been dumped."

A TfL spokesperson said: "We are working with the emergency services to reopen the roads as soon as possible, although that part of the A23 Purley Way will require resurfacing and the closure is expected to remain in place for several hours.

"The closure will cause significant disruption and motorists are advised to seek alternative routes."

The congestion follows the road closure yesterday, caused by a major fire at a tyre-shredding plant.

An exclusion zone was put in place between Waddon Way and Edgehill Road because of fears of an explosion, but the road reopened yesterday afternoon.
