Fire crews are still working to extinguish the blaze at a tyre recycling plant which started two days ago.

The fire at the Neolay plant on Pegasus Road, Purley Way, started in the early hours of September 22.

Since then fire crews from stations across south London have been working to put out the blaze.

The two storey building has been devastated by the fire, with the remaining part of the roof collapsing overnight.

A spokesman for Croydon fire station said: "We are still sending relief crews down to Purley Way.

"One of our machines left here at 8am, but now the whole roof has collapsed it is more difficult for us to get to the remaining pockets of fire."

Last night, fire crews received a number of calls from residents who reported they could smell burning.

Many of Croydon's residents also took to Twitter to cdiscuss the smell.

Tweets included "Croydon's air smells of burning rubber" and "The smell of burning tyres in south Croydon is very strong!"

Paul Foster, Managing Director of Neolay said: "We are fully aware the local community has experienced a significant amount of inconvenience as a result of this incident.

“We would like to express our appreciation to local residents and businesses for their patience and assure them we intend to do everything we can to minimise the impact on the surroundings during the clean up and any planned reconstruction."
