A new drop in centre allowing 13-19 year-olds to access a range of healthcare services is opening in Streatham.

The Streatham Well Centre will provide an accessible and informal youth-friendly service in an effort to increase the number of young people seeking care and advice.

The project is jointly run by the Herne Hill Group Practice and local youth work charity Redthread and is funded by Lambeth Council, NHS London, GSTT Charity & SLAM Charitable Trust.

The practice will initially open three days a week after its launch on October 5.

The centre will be based at the Streatham Youth Community Centre in Wellfield Road. Appointments will not be needed and young people will be able to go and come as they please.

Young people will have access to an experienced nurse and youth worker, and a GP will be on hand for part of the week. Substance misuse services for under 18s and a senior mental health worker will also be made available for some sessions.

Attendees will receive targeted support tailored to their specific needs and be encouraged to visit their own GP once they have gained confidence in seeking treatment. Lambeth Council's youth worker will assist unregistered patients to register with a local GP.

Cllr Pete Robbins, Lambeth Council Cabinet Member for Children and Young People's Service, said: "This will be an invaluable resource for young people in South Lambeth. Our aim is to increase the health-seeking behaviour of adolescents at this vulnerable and formative stage of their lives.

"We want all children in Lambeth to have the best possible start in life and to improve the quality of their lifestyles and well-being now and in the future."
