The driver of a BMW with false plates helped himself to more than £75 worth of fuel from a petrol station in Epsom.

Shortly before 9.50pm on Tuesday, September 13, a blue BMW pulled into a service station on London Road, Epsom.

A man got out of the back seat and filled up the tank with 53 litres of diesel.

The car then drove off without paying.

The man driving was described as white, in his 40s with grey hair and of medium build.

Police have released a CCTV image of a man they would like to speak to about the incident.

Investigating officer, Detective Constable Andy Cooper, said: "We know the BMW was using false plates, stolen from a local registered keeper, which is why we need members of the community to help us out with the name of this man.

"Stealing fuel may seem like a victimless crime but at the end of the day each and every motorist will end up paying to cover the cost of this theft.

"Therefore I would ask for people to look closely at the CCTV and if you recognise this man come forward with the information I need to make an arrest."

Anyone with information should call Surrey Police on 101 quoting reference number EP/11/4033, or call Crimestoppers if you wish to remain anonymous on 0800 555 111.
