A teenage looter who handed himself in after seeing his photo in the Croydon Guardian has been sentenced to 18 months in a young offenders’ institute.

Aaron Douglas admitted breaking into a jeweller’s shop in Crystal Palace during the riots on August 8.

Police released his image from CCTV footage which featured in the Croydon Guardian’s Shop Them All campaign.

The 18-year-old saw himself in the media and handed himself in.

Appearing in court on August 13, he admitted breaking into Crystal Palace Jewellers in Church Road, Upper Norwood and stealing goods worth £6,100 in the early hours of August 9.

There were two raids on the store - the first by 10 males who were later joined by a gang of 20 people.

Douglas had gone to Kennington police station, accompanied by his sister, to surrender after his family persuaded him to confess.

At Inner London Crown Court he was sentenced to 18 months, less the 33 days he had spent on remand.

Prosecutor Catherine Wear said Douglas, of Gibbs Square, Norwood Park, was caught on CCTV lifting up a security shutter to help other raiders in and out.

The court heard Douglas was very close to his family and were shocked by his behaviour.
