A home for the visually impaired has been included on a list of sites in the borough recommended for future housing development.

The Development and Delivery Plan, compiled by Epsom and Ewell Council, highlights 20 sites, all bar one in Epsom, which the council feel could be developed in the next 20 years.

But the inclusion of Swail House in Ashley Road, owned by Action for the Blind, has left residents unnerved despite assurances that there are no plans to actually redevelop.

Resident, Geoff Jelly, said: "I think it’s hugely unsettling to the tenants and people are concerned.

"I think many have been reassured but personally I am not one of them.

"They could simply remove their name from the list but they are refusing to do that."

Councillors will be visiting Swail House on Moncay, October 3, to discuss with residents why it is on the list.

Other sites, within 200 yards of each other, include the Dairy Crest Head Quarters in Alexandra Road, the Build Center opposite Dairy Crest and the railway cutting in Mill Road, which Liberal Democrat Councillor, Julie Morris, believes is not sustainable.

She said: "The surrounding area simply won't support such development.

"The parking is out of control in the area and with parking standards set so low, where on earth would the cars park.

"Even four-bed homes seem to attract only one off-road parking space.

"There are already complaints again this year about people living near Wallace Fields schools, the nearest to all three sites, who just can't get their kids a place there, so the basic infrastructure in terms of education would be unable to support such development."

Residents Association Councillor, Neil Dallen said: "The DPD is about pinpointing sites which, sometime in the next 20 years, we think could be used for housing.

"That’s not saying people have got to take it and build on it.

"It’s saying that those are the sites which would look favourable for housing and redevelopment."

A spokesperson for Epsom and Ewell Council added: "The allocation of a site in this document does not mean that the council will implement it.

"In most cases proposals will be brought forward and carried out by the private sector."

A public consultation on all sites is currently underway and will end on October 24.
