Scores of police officers in riot gear lined up to separate Brighton and Crystal Palace supporters last night after the teams' league clash.

Violence erupted at Brighton station at about 11pm with rival groups attacking each other in the aftermath of Palace's 3-1 win at the American Express Community Stadium.

Officers quickly broke up the clashes with the use of police dogs and batons and closed off the station for about 30 minutes.

Earlier in the evening, police reported 12 arrests inside the stadium.

One Albion fan was treated by emergency services after an incident just before kick off.

The extent of his injuries are not yet known but three men were arrested.

As thousands of fans made their way home via Falmer station "isolated" incidents of public disorder broke out.

Eye witness Nathan Brice, 18, from Coldean, said there were several scuffles and incidents of stone throwing.

Sussex Police have confirmed a total of 28 arrests - mostly for public order offences and assaults.

A 23-year-old was arrested before kick-off on suspicion of breaking a football banning order.

Police also asked five pubs in Seaford to close their doors to stop fans congregating before the match. All five agreed and were back open by 7pm last night.
