Public toilets where a gay man was murdered in 2008 should be knocked down after another incident, campaigners have said.

The calls have been reignited after a man indecently exposed himself to a teenage boy.

The victim entered the toilets in Walton Lane at 4pm on Saturday, September 24, and became aware of a man who was standing by the sinks looking at himself in the mirror.

The man then exposed himself to the victim before calmly walking out of the toilets.

In 2008, Jeff Akers was ferociously stabbed to death in a homophobic attack in the same toilet block.

Mark Malone is currently serving a life sentence for his murder.

Councillor Rowan Cole called for the toilets, a well-known gay cruising spot, to be closed down after the murder.

He continued his plea after hearing news of the recent indecent exposure incident.

Coun Cole described the site as a centre for criminal and deviant behaviour and said it was time the council looked at the safety and viability of the toilets.

Coun Cole said: “They should’ve been knocked down, blown up or demolished several years ago, as soon as that murder happened.

“This is a site that’s well known to the community to avoid because of its deviant behaviour. This is not a one-off.”

Police stepped up patrols after the area, but CCTV is not in place.

They will be demolished when work begins on the new Walton Bridge, scheduled for next year.

The man who exposed himself was olive-skinned, about 5ft 10in, with very short black and grey hair, of medium build, and between 50 and 60.

He had a wrinkled face and was wearing a green jacket and dark trousers.

Detective Constable Sarah McCabe said: “Fortunately the young victim was not harmed during this incident but he was understandably very shaken by such an upsetting experience.”
