Fuel thieves have hit lorries in the area as prices of petrol and diesel continue to rise.

Elmbridge police have encouraged drivers to be vigilant after lorries parked in West Molesey and a building site in Walton were targeted.

Thieves siphoned off large amounts of diesel from two articulated lorries in a business compound in Central Avenue, West Molesey, between 4pm on Saturday, September 24, and 6am on Monday, September 26.

Police have linked the theft with another from a business address in the same road between 5.30pm on Thursday, September 22, and 5.45am on Friday, September 23.

The offenders gained access to the site by removing a padlock from the main gate and stole 200 litres of diesel from three lorries parked in the yard overnight.

Officers also believe a theft of fuel from a building site in Oakbank Avenue, Walton, between 5pm on Thursday, September 22, and 7am on Friday, September 23, may be linked to the offences in West Molesey.

Elmbridge Neighbourhood Inspector David Hollingsworth said: “The recent spate of fuel thefts in West Molesey and Walton is unusual for Elmbridge and police are thoroughly investigating the latest incidents.

“As fuel becomes more expensive it becomes more attractive to thieves and we urge all vehicle owners to take extra precautions to secure their vehicles, especially if they hold a large amount of fuel.”

He said lockable fuel caps and anti-siphon devices could prevent fuel theft.
