A crowd of spectators watched firefighters spend 90 minutes battling to extinguish a torched car spilling burning fuel onto a road.

The Audi A4 was set alight in Rastell Avenue, Lambeth, at about 2am on Sunday, October 2.

The spectators took photos and phoned friends as firefighters from West Norwood tackled the blaze, made more serious by a ruptured fuel tank.

A fire service spokesman said: “Quite a lot of people were watching – it was quite a spectacle, I guess.

“It was a bit of a tricky one to put out because the fuel tank had ruptured, so it was spilling fuel constantly so the crew was having to put out fuel as it was coming out of the car.”

No-one was injured, but the car, which was well alight when firefighters arrive, was described as a complete write off.

Police are investigating.
