A man who tried to put out his burning cooker was taken to hospital with burns to his hands.

Firefighters were called to the address in St Benedicts Close, Tooting, at about 7.15pm on Friday, September 30.

The man, believed to be in his 20s, was cooking when oil overheated, spilt onto the hob, and caught fire.

He tried to put out the flames himself, but had to call the emergency services after he sustained minor injuries.

The cooker and the extractor hood above it were damaged in the incident, and the kitchen suffered minor smoke damage.

The fire investigation team was called because the man was hurt, and firefighters did not finally leave the property until 10.50pm.

A spokesman advised people not to try to tackle fires themselves, but to close the door to the room and call the fire brigade.

He urged people with any concerns to contact their local station to arrange a home fire safety visit.
