A Kingston church will be “ringing in” the New Year with a brand new composition aimed at capturing the spirit of the Olympic and Paralympics Games.

Howard Skempton’s Five Rings Triples will be chiming from the All Saints Church, in Clarence Street, at midnight, on December 31, to celebrate the beginning of the Cultural Olympiad.

The All Saints bell-ringers will be the first performers of songs for The New Music 20x12 – 20 new pieces of music each lasting 12 minutes.

Kate Flavell, president of the Central Council of Church Bell-Ringers and member of the All Saints team, said the group are very excited about the prospect of opening the Cultural Olympiad.

She said: “It all happen by coincidence really because they asked us to perform for the Olympiad but at the time the composer had not composed the song.

“So seeing as it was a bit of a rush I suggested that we use my local church to perform the song at new year – like we do every year anyway.

“As it now turns out the All Saints bell-ringers will be opening the festival which is quite an honour.”

The project, culminating in the London 2012 Festival, is designed to inspire creativity and give everyone the chance to be part of next year’s Games.

The All Saints bell-ringers will also feature at a performance of all 20 pieces over the weekend of July 13-15, 2012, at London’s Southbank Centre.
