A rare painting found by a bargain hunter at a car boot sale has been returned to the scene which inspired it nearly 80 years ago.

Kevin Dixon, who regularly travelled past All Saint's Church in Carshalton on his way to clean windows, has long been an admirer of the view.

When Mr Dixon spotted the dusty watercolour buried among bric-a-brac at a car boot sale in Wimbledon, he instantly recognised it and decided to buy it.

The shrewd shopper picked up Edwin Ounsted's 1933 painting for a mere £25.

Wheeler dealer Mr Dixon has now left the painting with the church as the Vicar was keen to get some copies done.

Mr Dixon said: "Apparently, paintings from that side of the church are quite rare, people don't really see that view very often. The vicar wants to show the congregation the picture too, which is great."
