A police officer from Carshalton has denied killing Ian Tomlinson at the G20 protests in London.
Father-of-two PC Simon Harwood, pleaded not guilty to manslaughter this morning at Southwark Crown Court.
Mr Tomlinson, a homeless 47-year-old newspaper seller, collapsed and died on the fringes of the demonstrations in central London on April 1, 2009.
PC Harwood, 44, was charged with manslaughter after the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) reviewed evidence given at an inquest earlier this year in to Mr Tomlinson's death.
The jury returned an unlawful killing verdict.
The death became an international controversy after footage was handed to the Guardian newspaper of a confrontation between Mr Tomlinson and the police at the protests.
Video footage showed Mr Tomlinson staggered away from a police cordon after being hit with a baton and pushed to the ground.
The 47-year-old collapsed minutes later. He later died.
PC Harwood is due to stand trial at Southwark Crown Court on June 13 next year.
