Dozens turned out to enjoy a pink champagne and a sweet reception last week in support of Breast Cancer Care.

47-year-old Claire Jordan raised £250 by hosting a Pink Friday on October 14 at Readings newsagents in Waterloo Road, Epsom, which this year celebrated its 40th anniversary.

A peer support volunteer for Breast Cancer Care, Mrs Jordan was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 31.

She said: "I was diagnosed when I was very young at 31 with no history in the family so it was a complete shock.

"Although I was aware of Breast Cancer Care as a charity, there wasn’t an awful lot of information or help, especially for younger people.

"It was quite an isolating experience.

"One of the reasons I joined Breast Cancer Care years later was because I knew that if I have had someone who I could talk to and get that support it would have been a lot easier.

"It is a charity that is very close to my heart."

Guests were treated to a glass of pink bubbly, sweets and a raffle.

Sandra Hill, manager at Readings newsagents, said: "It was a great success.

"We have still got a collection on the counter until the end of October.

"I lost a very good friend to breast cancer about 10 years ago.

"Without these people giving their time and people like Claire working as an unpaid volunteer there wouldn’t be half as much money raised.

"That’s why I didn’t mind fiving the shop up for a day."

The newsagent has recently launched a new traditional sweets shop online.
