By Councillor Peter Southgate, Merton Council (Leader, Merton Park ward Independents)

Councillor Dean wilfully misunderstands the position of the Merton Park Independents on extending controlled parking zones (CPZs) to Saturdays.

We have never objected to the council consulting residents on such proposals.

As a grass roots organisation we derive our political legitimacy solely from the voters of Merton Park Ward, not from national political parties directing us from Westminster.

We never take our residents for granted. So when it was proposed to extend CPZs to Saturdays, we turned to our residents for their views, and no fewer than 652 of them responded.

This is a powerful demonstration of community involvement in the decision making process, unmatched in any of the wards controlled by the Tories or Labour in Merton.

Our residents made it very clear they do not want to see CPZs extended to Saturdays, with 88 per cent opposed.

In the light of this overwhelming evidence, we call on the council to call a halt to consulting any further on extending controls to Saturdays in the three CPZs in Merton Park Ward.

What efforts have you made to establish the views of residents in Dundonald Ward, Coun Dean?
