Deaths linked to domestic abuse will be scrutinized more thoroughly for potential failings in safeguarding women, a council report suggests.

Lambeth Council will coordinate investigations into domestic violence homicides with the police and health authorities following government legislation introduced in April.

According to a report by the Safer Lambeth Executive, each independent review would cost the council about £5,000.

There were nine murders linked to domestic abuse in the borough since 2003, with two deaths between March 2010 and April 2011.

Lambeth Council Cabinet Member for Community Safety, Councillor Rachel Heywood, said: "With one in four women affected directly by domestic violence at some point in their lifetimes it is essential that we ensure support services which handle these cases are as responsive as possible.

"There were two cases of murder caused by domestic violence in Lambeth last year – two too many and this strategy is about safeguarding victims."
