A group of young people took part in a speed dating event last week with councillors and officers from Epsom and Ewell Council.

The event, which took place on October 12 at Glyn School, Epsom, was part of Local Democracy Week.

The 15 young people tempted to turn up at the event were able to quiz eight councillors and four officers during a four minute 'date' sharing their views, opinions and suggestions on political issues.

Councillor Jan Mason, chairman of the leisure committee, said: "The national Local Democracy Week campaign aims to make young people more aware of their local council and to get them involved in politics in a fun way.

"The council’s political speed-dating event really gave our young people the opportunity to have a genuine voice at a community level and express their opinions to us as Councillors and the wider community."

Information collected on the evening will be fed back to relevant partner agencies to plan for future local democracy events.

Each young person received an information pack full of local leisure opportunities and a democracy pack with suggestions on how to get involved with politics at a local level, how to register to vote and a selection of leaflets from the Electoral Commission.
