The USA Olympic cycling team will train for the London 2012 Games in Surrey.

Local cyclists will have the chance to share their roads with some of the world’s best riders as top athletes prepare for the Olympic road race and time trial events which will both take place in Surrey next year.

USA Cycling vice president of athletics Jim Miller said: "We are thankful for the opportunity to operate out of Surrey pre-Olympics.

"Surrey offers an unmatched combination of infrastructure and location that is ideal for our preparations for one of the biggest days in sport."

Denise Saliagopoulos, Surrey County Council’s cabinet member for community services and the 2012 Games, said: "It’s a real honour for Surrey to host athletes from a country with as strong a sporting pedigree as the USA.

"I’m sure Surrey will give them a welcome they will never forget.

"I hope their presence will encourage even more people to take up the sport."

Olympians already signed up to train in the county include Australian cyclists, Chinese tennis players, and Croatian Paralympic swimmers.
