Two young campaigners have set a Guinness World Record for the most people to sign up to the organ donor register in one hour.

321 people signed up at a special event, hosted by T4 presenter Jameela Jamil, at London’s Covent Garden on Saturday, October 15, smashing the previous record of 221.

Abby Thackray, 21, from Epsom and Hope Milne, 15, from Croydon were inspired to start their campaign to increase the number of organ donors after both of their siblings underwent transplants.

Abby’s sister had a double lung transplant when she was 23 while Hope’s brother had an organ transplant when he was four, donated by a 14 year old girl.

The girls are hoping to encourage young people to talk to their parents or guardians about their wishes, and are also lobbying MPs to get an option for organ donation added to the electoral roll.

The girls' campaign has gained support from Channel 4’s Battlefront initiative, which aims to raise awareness of young campaigners, and will be the subject of a TV episode in December.

Their campaign is supported by Alexandra Burke, winner of XFactor 2008, whose mother is waiting for a kidney transplant.

She said: "I’m really pleased with two young girls doing this kind of campaign because my mum got diagnosed with kidney failure a couple of years ago, and she is still in need of a kidney."

Alexandra Burke performed two singles, Hallelujah and Perfect, before inviting Hope and Abby on stage.

A group of young people, who have all received life saving organ transplants, were then invited on stage each releasing a heart shaped balloon in honor of their donor.

The girls’ episode will air on December 4 as part of Channel 4’s T4 zone.
