A pensioner was taken to hospital after being overcome by fumes at a sheltered accommodation block.

A piece of plastic was left on a hob at Peverel-managed Arbrook Court in Clayton Road, Chessington, shortly before midnight on Monday night, firefighters said.

Smoke and fumes were created by the small fire. Fire engines from New Malden and Surbiton attended.

Firefighters gave oxygen to an elderly lady of about 85-years-old and she was taken to hospital as a precaution.

New Malden crew manager Dave Stapley said: “They weren’t evacuated because it is standard procedure they stay in their rooms.

“We just gave her oxygen and she was taken to hospital as a precaution.”

Arbrook Court is a sheltered accommodation block of 34 flats built in the 1990s.

An elderly woman died in a fire at another Peverel Retirement owned block last month.

Irene Cockerton, 87, was killed in the blaze at Gibson Court, Hinchley Wood.

Other displaced elderly residents have been told it could be 18 months before they can move back into their flats again.
